I did not realize how long I had been in the shower until I noticed my pruny fingertips, and that Lucy had fallen asleep on one of the twin beds.

As quietly as possible, I snuck out of her room and went back to my own.

I slipped the key into the lock, and practically slid into the dark room, trying to make the least amount of noise possible.

“You’re back,” Griswold exclaimed, turning on the lamp closest to the twin bed that he was lying on. I looked toward the other bed to see a body-sized lump completely covered in the orange and green checkered bedspread.

Pressing my index finger to my lips, I nodded. Looking to my right, I saw that my dad was in the same position, practically dead to the world.

“He hasn’t moved,” Griswold whispered, nodding to the armchair.

I nodded and then slid off my sneakers. Not even asking Griswold to move over, I walked over to the bed and lay down next to him.

Before I could close my eyes, Griswold said, “What do you think you’ll do when your dad wakes up?”

Turning to face him, I said, “I don’t know. I’ll ask him why he did what he did, that is if he even realizes that he brought the tiger, earthquakes, sludge, snow boulders, and who knows what else into the world.”

“You think that it was unintentional?”

“Maybe,” I said, yawning. “He’s definitely in an extremely deep sleep, so I’m pretty sure that he has not been awake in a while.”

“Maybe,” Griswold said, almost in the form of a question. “I don’t know. Well, either way, I can imagine whatever you need me to, to stop him.”

“Thanks, Grizz,” I said, yawning again. “Let’s turn off the light. I need to get some sleep.”

“Sure,” Griswold said, but then added, “Is it weird to see your dad again?”

I sighed, coming to terms with the fact that I wasn’t going to be able to go to sleep anytime soon.

“Yeah, I guess, I don’t really remember him from ten years ago, so yeah, it’s pretty strange.”

Griswold was quiet for a beat, as if he were processing what I said.

“Are you going to tell your mom?”

“Are you kidding?” I scoffed. “What good would that do?”

Griswold shrugged and then said, “I don’t know. Just asking.”

“I’m pretty sure that she’s done with him. She never mentions him,” I said, and then let out a curt laugh as I added, “I can’t even imagine them together. Hell, sometimes I don’t even know how I’m their son.”

Griswold nodded, and then said, “Yeah, I get that. I feel that way too, with my parents I mean.”

I was a little taken aback, not because I doubted the truth of the statement but because Griswold had admitted that that was how he felt. In the ten years that I have known him, I don’t remember him ever speaking about himself as an outsider in his own family. If he felt that way, he pretty much kept it to himself.
